Why We Do Something Is More Important Than What We Do

Why we do something is even more important than what we do. The Ten Commandments tell us what to do or not do, but love tells us why. First Corinthians 13 — the Love Chapter — explains it. “If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but I do not have love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal” (1 Corinthians 13:1 NET). Of course, we have responsibility for all our actions; and, even our courts of law in western jurisprudence establish the difference between manslaughter and murder. But, the preeminent motivation of love defines who God is — “God is love” (1John 4:8) — and, why we should do everything we should do. “Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself” (Matthew 22:37-39 KJV). LORD, help us not to lose our purpose.
