Raise Up Godly Men

God, give us godly men, who will walk in love, faith, and purity. “Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to Thy word” (Psalm 119:9 KJV). Christianity is a hard way, unless we learn the secret of the gift of the Holy Spirit (Ezekiel 36:27; Acts 2:38). Young men, who walk in purity cannot achieve it through sheer force of will. Simply attempting to obey the command of sexual purity, will not truly accomplish it, without the Holy Spirit. “For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of His good pleasure” (Philippians 2:13). We fail our young men, if we neglect to teach them, The Holy Spirit’s primary function is to inspire us to walk in obedience. We are commanded, “Keep thyself pure” (1Timothy 5:22). But, our good intentions will only prevail unless the Spirit of God gives us the victory. “And I will put My Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in My statutes, and ye shall keep My judgments, and do them” (Ezekiel 36:27). Faith or confidence that the Holy Spirit inspires us to obey, will cause us to be obedient, and will give us the victory. “For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith” (1John 5:4).

In the OT, a godly young person was one who sought God with their whole heart. “Blessed are they that keep His testimonies, and that seek Him with the whole heart. With my whole heart have I sought Thee: O let me not wander from Thy commandments” (Psalm 119:2, 10). The greater advantage of the New Covenant is the indwelling presence of God’s Spirit, who inspires us to obedience (Ezekiel 36:27).

Why hasn’t the heritage of the righteous always been a smooth path of obedience rather than a battle between righteousness and wickedness?

First, the Almighty is God over everything. “The earth is the LORD’S, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein” (Psalm 24:1).

Second, humanity was given stewardship of the earth. “And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth” (Genesis 1:28).

Third, Satan became the god of this world, when the entire population of the Garden of Eden rejected the Creator. “In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them” (2Corinthians 4:4).

Fourth, a spiritual battle for the cosmos has resulted, where God’s servants preach obedience to the Gospel to the ends of the earth. “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen” (Matthew 28:19-20).

Fifth, love of God must overcome love of the world. “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world” (1John 2:15-16).

Sixth, spiritual warfare requires a type of John Bunyan Pilgrim’s ProgressHoly War, where both men and women of God put on the Whole Armor of God until the KING of Kings and LORD of Lord’s returns to rule over the earth. “Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;” (Ephesians 6:18).

Seventh, a restricted understanding of our warfare limits our efforts and success. “And when all things shall be subdued unto Him, then shall the Son also Himself be subject unto Him that put all things under Him, that God may be all in all” (1Corinthians 15:28).

In summary, our young men will see victory in their purity, when they cooperate with the Holy Spirit to inspire them to obedience. Fathers and husbands will not only defend their families, but will lead their churches in a Spiritual War against the darkness of the world to the knowledge of Christ.

Father, raise up men of God to lead Your people. Give us godly, courageous leaders. Educate them. Fortify them. Protect them. Lord Jesus, return quickly. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Finishing the Job

It’s not over until it’s over, but faith already believes for the victory. “For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith” (1John 5:4 KJV). Does faith mean we can become complacent about obedience in the small things in the meantime? Certainly not. We must walk carefully but not fearfully. Israel had just completed a monumental victory over Jericho with clear, supernatural intervention from Jehovah in bringing down the walls with blasts from trumpets punctuated with a shout (Joshua 6), but they were clearly instructed not to take any spoils from the city for that was devoted to the LORD and “accursed” (Joshua 6:17) to them. God gave Joshua the victory, but it was spoiled by Achan stealing from the LORD’s devoted things. Likewise, stealing God’s glory in our triumphs is a curse. “Thus saith the LORD, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches: But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth Me, that I am the LORD which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith the LORD” (Jeremiah 9:23-24).

God’s anger is kindled, when we are oblivious to whom the glory belongs. We say we understand the glory is His, but we need to be careful about our heart and actions. Otherwise, we will come against a seemingly small task afterwards only to be defeated. What is the remedy? Be as careful in the preparation, as you would have to be in rectifying the problem. So, Joshua called out Achan, solved that problem, then went on to complete the destruction of Ai (Joshua 6). Father, it takes patience of faith to see the job through to the end. Grant us that faith and patience to reap the harvest. Help us not to faint, if the victory does not come easy. Make us to see You as our Sustainer, especially when the battle is difficult. Produce in us a greater understanding and appreciation of who you are. Cause us to love and admire You for the results. Lord Jesus, return quickly and deliver Your people. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Vain is the Help of Man

“Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the LORD our God” (Psalm 20:7 KJV). David slew Goliath, not because of superior armament, but because of His trust in the LORD. In life, warfare, politics, business, and sports, we conceive of competition, where my victory is only your defeat. Where I live, because you die. But, we forget, God is more interested in our heart than He is in our financial bottom line or the results of an election. “Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life” (Proverbs 4:23). If I must sacrifice my relationship to God, then I would not want that victory. “For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” (Mark 8:36). God’s people become like the world, when they measure victory in terms other than faith. “For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith” (1John 5:4). It is more important that God would be honored than I live, succeed, or prosper. Only those who create their god as a figment of their imagination can afford to sacrifice that god for the benefit of their success. Only those who see nothing beyond the here and now could sneer, “Winning Is Everything, Stupid.” Father, deliver us from the victories, where Christ is not enshrined as the Victor. Teach us to compete so no one can take away our crown of victory. Cause us to elevate our understanding of You and our opinions about ourselves that we might war a good warfare. Lord Jesus, return quickly. Amen and amen.

Fighting on Foreign Ground

Home court advantage always belongs to the LORD. Our opponents mistake our strength, as if it depended upon our location. “And the servants of the king of Syria said unto him, Their gods are gods of the hills; therefore they were stronger than we; but let us fight against them in the plain, and surely we shall be stronger than they” (1Kings 20:23 KJV). The LORD always wants His people to prepare their utmost for the battle and the likely casualties of the battle, but to undoubtedly trust Him for the victory. As at another time King Jehoshaphat of Judah prayed about his coming battle, “O our God, wilt thou not judge them? for we have no might against this great company that cometh against us; neither know we what to do: but our eyes are upon Thee” (2Chronicles 20:12). The LORD must take great pleasure in delivering His people to demonstrate He is the LORD, because He also did it for even the Northern Kingdom of Israel: “26 And it came to pass at the return of the year, that Benhadad numbered the Syrians, and went up to Aphek, to fight against Israel. 27 And the children of Israel were numbered, and were all present, and went against them: and the children of Israel pitched before them like two little flocks of kids; but the Syrians filled the country. 28 And there came a man of God, and spake unto the king of Israel, and said, Thus saith the LORD, Because the Syrians have said, The LORD is God of the hills, but he is not God of the valleys, therefore will I deliver all this great multitude into thine hand, and ye shall know that I am the LORD” (1Kings 20:26-28). LORD, may we know the certainty that here or away, You are the God, who delivers us. Teach us to act and believe, “Not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit, saith the LORD of hosts” (Zechariah 4:6). Come quickly, Lord Jesus, and deliver Your people. In Your name, we pray. Amen.

Overcoming the World

Nikaō or overcoming is nearly exclusively used in the NT by John. Saints conquering the world is God’s expectation of us. Whenever we find difficulty with victory, we need the Holy Spirit to grant us a more perfect understanding of our victory. For example, sin is primarily an action, not simply a condition, since overcoming sin involves a better comprehension of what sin is. Remember, even Lucifer had to sin before he became a sinner. Sin is the act of transgressing God’s law or the “transgression of the law” (1John 3:4 KJV), which is more than a condition of “lawlessness” (3:4 NIV, NET). Beginning with that understanding, the Saints no longer need to let the enemy overcome them with accusations that they are inherently evil and unworthy to receive the crown of victory. “For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God” (1John 5:4-5 KJV). Jesus seven times addressed the Seven Churches of Revelation with the challenge and promise of overcoming (Revelation 2:7, 11, 17, 26; 3:5, 12, 21). Overcoming means more than getting to the finish line of a race, but defeating the enemy and coming away victorious. Overcoming gravity is not just a safe landing but ascending to the heights. Christians need to see the rainbow as not just surviving the Flood but going on to build the Kingdom of God. We overcome through confidence in Christ. “Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of His knowledge by us in every place” (2Corinthians 2:14). FATHER, we can conquer all things through Christ. Cause us to understand how to overcome the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, that the adversary would not have mastery over us. Cause our understanding of Jesus to be the source of our ability to overcome. Magnify Your name through our victory. In Jesus’ name, we pray . Amen.

144,000 Israelites Safe in Heaven (Revelation 14:1)

Safe in Heaven, 144,000 Tribulation Saints, who are Israelites, have made it through the Tribulation Week without suffering martyrdom and have been Pre-Wrath Raptured before the final Seven Vial Judgments (Revelation 16) are poured out at the end of the Seventieth Week of Daniel. “And I looked, and, lo, a Lamb stood on the mount Sion, and with Him an hundred forty and four thousand, having His Father’s name written in their foreheads” (Revelation 14:1 KJV). Roughly speaking, this would be akin to the head of state (Christ the Lamb) greeting hostages, who have returned from captivity from an enemy country. These are the same 144,000 sealed in Revelation 7. All of this indicates that there will be an enormous number of Israelis saved immediately after the Pre-Tribulational Rapture, which means evangelistic efforts in Israel must be effectively reaching out to Israelis prior to the Tribulation. Support and pray for those ministries. The faithfulness of God to preserve all of His Saints presently from temptation, is also able to do so during the Tribulation. “There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it” (1Corinthians 10:13). Remember, the 144,000 are the “firstfruits” (Revelation 14:4) of the nation of Israel, who will “be born at once” (Isaiah 66:8) at Messiah Jesus’ Second Coming. LORD, You are the same God now and forever. Demonstrate Yourself strong on behalf of Your people now and Your 144,000 later. In Jesus’ name, return quickly. Amen and amen.

Satan’s Devices

“Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices” (2Corinthians 2:11 KJV). Paul warns the Corinthians from failing to restore a penitent backslider, lest they be “swallowed up with overmuch sorrow” (2:7). Satan’s devices are many: (1) our failure to acknowledge him as a continual, arch “adversary” (1Peter 5:8), (2) our lack of understanding him as a master “tempter” (Matthew 4:3; 1Thessalonians 3:5), (3) our not properly crediting him as the ruler of the “darkness of this world” (Ephesians 6:12), (4) our not acknowledging that earthly kingdoms belong to the “prince of this world” (John 12:31; 14:30; 16:11), and (5) above all, our failure to properly acknowledge the devil’s necessity of gaining permission from the Almighty to do anything — “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you” (James 4:7). LORD, may You be magnified by the enemy fleeing from us. Amen.

Perfect Peace of Mind

“Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace [Hebrew, shâlôm, completeness, tranquility], whose mind is stayed on Thee: because he trusteth in Thee” (Isaiah 26:3 KJV). In Scripture, peace is not a lack of warfare or hostilities with man. Perfect peace is a state of mind, which comes from absolute confidence and trust in God. Said our soon-to-be-crucified Saviour, “Peace I leave with you, My peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid” (John 14:27). Do not be downcast! “These things I have spoken unto you, that in Me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world” (16:33).

Do Not Relinquish Your Life Lightly

Though Christians may be willing to lay down their lives for Christ, we must be willing to endure the often difficulty of living for Christ. I’ve heard stories of Christians competing for the honor of sacrificing their physical lives for the cause of Christ. This is noble, if we are just as willing to endure the suffering for Christ, should we live. “And He said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for My [Christ’s] strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me” (2Corinthians 12:9 KJV).

I Can Do All Things

“I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me” (Philippians 4:13 KJV). Humanism makes large about the abilities of man. Christianity is about our need for Christ. Through Christ we understand our humanity only has meaning because of Christ. Only through Christ are we truly able to do anything worth doing. The enemy cannot win, if we rely only upon Christ.
