Try the Spirits

“Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world” (1John 4:1 KJV). Of what need to try the spirits? Like determining if the water is safe to drink, when visiting a foreign country. Consider that it was John the Beloved Apostle, who made this command or imperative to his “little children” (2:1, 12, 13, 18, 28; 3:7, 18; 4:4; 5:21), so he was being careful for the young ones without being an alarmist. Why did John mention “false prophets,” when speaking of “spirits”? Just as God’s Spirit influences the godly, evil spirits influence the ungodly. God’s Word taught by His Spirit enables us to discern the spirits. “To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them” (Isaiah 8:20).

Our mistake is to assume the Kingdom of God is not in active warfare with the devil. “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour” (1Peter 5:8). Only action based upon faith can put the enemy to flight. “Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world” (5:9). Start with not being afraid. “And I say unto you my friends, Be not afraid of them that kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do” (Luke 12:4). But, you say, ‘The agony of the pain the enemy may inflict may be too much for me.’ True, we do not have a No Suffering Clause in our contract with the LORD.

What’s the importance of suffering? Jesus promised us suffering or “tribulation” (John 16:33), but added He had “overcome the world” (16:33) — and, so will we, if we trust Him. Suffering is God’s appointed means to teach us obedience, for “though He were a Son, yet learned He obedience by the things which He suffered” (Hebrews 5:8). But it is important to note, we do have an Escape Clause to limit our suffering to no more than we can bear. “There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer [allow] you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it” (1Corinthians 10:13). 

All enemies visible or invisible are to be dealt with through faith. “Whom resist stedfast in the faith” (1Peter 5:8). How does that work? Scripture is essentially a book of promises that God means what He says and says what He means, that is, take God at His Word. “So shall My word be that goeth forth out of My mouth: it shall not return unto Me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it” (Isaiah 55:11). Our chief difficulty is the prevention of becoming Dead Letter Literalists, where we neglect the spiritual reality of our existence. “Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and Thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart: for I am called by Thy name, O LORD God of hosts” (Jeremiah 15:16). If we can only remember this life is not just preparation for eternity, but we are duplicating or attempting to replicate life as it is in Heaven. “Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven” (Matthew 6:10). The Almighty is so much more ready to assist us, when He sees we are comprehending His plan. And, we are all the more delighted to labor for the understanding, since it puts us among His royalty to gain that understanding. “It is the glory of God to conceal a thing: but the honour of kings is to search out a matter” (Proverbs 25:2).

Now, when we speak of Spiritual Warfare, we should not become frightened of the ghost and the darkness. What is true during the day is true during the night. “Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness” (1Thessalonians 5:5). When God opens our eyes to the teeming hordes of the darkness around us — “Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places” (Ephesians 6:11-12) — for there are more with us than with them. “And he answered, Fear not: for they that be with us are more than they that be with them. And Elisha prayed, and said, LORD, I pray thee, open his eyes, that he may see. And the LORD opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw: and, behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha” (2Kings 6:16-17).

May God give us discernment by His Spirit from His Word to know the spirits, whether they are of God or nay. “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in His sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of Him with whom we have to do” (Hebrews 4:12-13).

Father, educate us about the reality of the war in which we are engaged. Cause us to measure the spirits with the light of Your Word. Cause us to see not just the foul fiend of the enemy, but to have a greater appreciation of You as the LORD of the Host. Hallelujah! Cause us to have courage and overcoming, and by Your grace, we shall! Lord Jesus, return quickly. In Jesus’ name, we ask it. Amen.

Spy Out the Land

OT Jewish espionage meant to “search the land of Canaan, which I [Jehovah] give unto the children of Israel” (Numbers 13:2 KJV). It was a spying out, reconnaissance, or probing of the Promised Land of Canaan to determine how best to take possession of it. Moses sent twelve to “spy out [Hebrew, tûr, explore] the land of Canaan” (13:17). They returned after 40 days to verify, “The land whither thou sentest us, and surely it floweth with milk and honey; and this [grapes, pomegranates, and figs, they brought back] is the fruit of it” (13:27). 

Before we condemn the Majority Report of the spies — and, it should be condemned — take note, they accurately described the enemy. Only their cowardice to face God’s enemies was to be condemned. “31 But the men who had gone up with him said, We are not able to go up against these people, because they are stronger than we are! 32 Then they presented the Israelites with a discouraging report of the land they had investigated, saying, The land that we passed through to investigate is a land that devours its inhabitants. All the people we saw there are of great stature. 33 We even saw the Nephilim [Hebrew, nephîyl, giants] there (the descendants of Anak came from the Nephilim), and we seemed like grasshoppers both to ourselves and to them”  (Numbers 13:31-33 NET). 

Nephilim? Exactly who are the Nephilim? 

You will find God defining His terms coherently by such as the Law of First Mention in Scripture. “There were giants [Hebrew, nephîyl, Nephilim] in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God [Hebrew, ben ělôhîym, only used to describe angels in OT, e.g., Job 2:1; 38:7] came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them [Jesus described the lack of necessity and forbiddeness of angels procreating with human females, i.e, Matthew 22:30, not the impossibility of angels doing so, rebelling against God’s command, who ‘kept not their first estate,’ Jude 1:6], the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown” (Genesis 6:4).  “Also after that” (Genesis 6:4) means there will be Nephilim in the earth at future times, i.e., Goliath of Gath, the giant whom David killed (1Samuel 17). And, yet again, “there was yet a battle in Gath, where was a man of great stature, that had on every hand six fingers, and on every foot six toes, four and twenty in number; and he also was born to the giant” (2Samuel 21:20). 

On face value of the text, it appears the disobedient Fallen Angels were simply attracted to the physical beauty of the human females, i.e., “That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose” (6:2). But, Yahweh’s Declaration of War upon Lucifer, following the sin of Adam and Eve, indicated a Seed War, where the physical fruit of Eve’s body would produce Christ (Isaiah 7:14; 9:6). But, the Adversary would also respond with Fallen Angels cohabiting with human females to eventually produce the physical seed of the Antichrist — a Nephilim. The Protoevangeleum:  “[Jehovah addressing the Serpent] And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed [to produce the Antichrist] and her seed [to produce the Lord Jesus Christ]; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel” (Genesis 3:15). 

Where were we?

The Promised Land of Canaan was just in reach of the Children of Israel, but ten out of twelve of the spies discouraged their brethren from obeying God to enter in and conquer the Promised Land. We may not be physically conquering a land; but, we must face our own Nephilim to bring the Gospel to the world (Matthew 28:19-20). If Scripture teaches us, “Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares” (Hebrews 13:2 ), then we may have unwittingly encountered God’s angels. But, we may also have unknowingly come across the Adversary’s Nephilim. Just as we know to turn away from evil, we need to turn away from evil companions, whether or not they are unknown-to-us-Nephilim. “Do not be misled: Bad company corrupts good character” (1Corinthians 15:33 NIV). And, even if we were suspicious of our bad companions, we should treat the Nephilim like we would the Wicked One. “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you” (James 4:7).

Father, give us grace to help in our time of need that we might have the certain victory over our Adversary the Devil — and, even the Nephilim. May You receive the credit for the victory. Lord, preserve Your people. In Jesus’ conquering name, we pray. Amen. 

Resist the Devil

“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you” (James 4:7 KJV). Submission to God gains His protection. Only then we can carry out any strategy to resist the wicked one. Since Christ’s shed blood on the Cross gains us the forgiveness of our sins, then it alone can defeat the power of Satan over us. “And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death” (Revelation 12:11). Satan counts upon us being overcome by the allurement of the world. “For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world” (1John 2:16).
He knows, if he can only get us to commit one sin, then we have already begun the destructive practice of sin. And, “whoever commits sin is a slave of sin” (John 8:34 NKJV). What breaks the cycle of sin? “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1John 1:9 KJV). Based upon Christ substituting His suffering on the Cross for our sins, He paid the “wages of sin” (Romans 6:23), which is “death” (6:23), and He can then forgive us, if we repent. By faith, we accept His payment for ourselves, repent of our sins, and proclaim our loyalty to Christ before the world, which is done at baptism, then we are raised in faith as newborn members of Christ’s Body, which is the Church. “Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost” (Acts 2:38). So, resisting the devil begins our victory, but the Holy Spirit given to us is the real source of our overcoming the devil and sin. “Not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit, saith the LORD of hosts” (Zechariah 4:6). Father, You have made faith so simple, a child can believe. May our childlike confidence in You cause us to resist the devil, that he would flee from even us. Make it to be so. In Jesus’ name, we ask it. Amen.

False Prophet: Directs the Worship of the Antichrist (Revelation 13:13)

Worship director for the Great World Leader is an esteemed role, except the Antichrist is that leader, who blasphemes Almighty God (Revelation 13:6), because he receives his power from the dragon (13:4). How does the world go so horribly wrong? Why does the LORD God allow this affront on such global display? “And he [the False Prophet] doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men” (Revelation 13:13 KJV). Toleration of the smallest wickedness in ourselves is the camel’s nose in the tent that brings down the house. “Abstain from all appearance of evil” (1Thessalonians 5:22). If we could not tolerate such sin in ourselves now, then would not such wholesale wickedness be condoned so easily later? “Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth” (James 3:5). 

Yahweh is carefully teaching the world, directing our hearts back to Him. It has not been apparent to the Church that the Judge of All the Earth has been teaching His people, we must submit our case before the Courts of Heaven, before He can act. He will not unilaterally perform His will in judging the earth until He gets our agreement or sanction. He created us to walk in agreement with Him, not to function as an independent tool. “O our God, wilt Thou not judge them? for we have no might against this great company that cometh against us; neither know we what to do: but our eyes are upon Thee” (2Chronicles 20:12). When sanctioned by the Courts of Heaven, Jehovah will do what He did for Jehoshaphat and Judah. “And when Judah came toward the watch tower in the wilderness, they looked unto the multitude, and, behold, they were dead bodies fallen to the earth, and none escaped” (20:24). The world will need to know the god of the World Leader and his Prophet is not the True God, and we, His people, call upon the LORD to judge the dragon, the Antichrist, and the False Prophet. 

LORD, we know it is Your desire that all should repent and none should perish, but Your Spirit will not always strive with man. You alone know, when humanity’s iniquity is full. Save such as should be saved. Honor Your holiness, love, and perfection. Fulfill all righteousness. Use the devil, the Antichrist, and False Prophet, then judge them. Save Israel. Return quickly, in Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen and amen. 

Is Satan Really The God Of This World?

As much as it might not sound right or feel good, Scripture labels satan as a god, but certainly not as Almighty God, the Creator of all. “In whom the god of this world [satan] hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them” (2Corinthians 4:4 KJV). Remember how Asaph described the heavenly scene? “God [Hebrew, elohim, singular] has taken His place in the divine council; in the midst of the gods [Hebrew, elohim, plural] He holds judgment” (Psalms 82:1 ESV). Jesus referred to Psalm 82:6-7 defending His claim to be the Son of God in John 10:34-36. But, Asaph noted, unlike the Almighty “like men you [the created, lesser gods or angels] shall die, and fall like any prince” (82:7). LORD, we worship You alone as the Almighty, the High and Lofty One That Inhabiteth Eternity. There is none like You. May we not be frightened by the god of this world. Preserve us from his devices. Give us of Your Word, that we may resist him, as Jesus did in the wilderness. There are “gods many and lords many” (1Corinthians 8:5 KJV), but only one Almighty. Establish Your throne in our hearts, and we look forward to You judging this wicked liar and usurper with his just deserts in the Lake of Fire (Revelation 20:10). Bring this to past. Return quickly, deliver Your people, and judge Your enemies. In Jesus’ almighty name, we pray. Amen and amen. 

Michael Fought Against the Dragon (Revelation 12:7-8)

War will be fought in Heaven between Michael and the dragon. Michael, the archangel (Jude 1:9) designated as the ruler or prince of Israel (Daniel 12:1) will direct his forces against the dragon and his angels. One can only wonder what warfare between supernatural-angelic-beings-who-cannot-physically-die looks like. “And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven” (Revelation 12:7-8 KJV). In the satan’s [literally, adversary] battle with Michael over the body of Moses, Michael won by uttering, “The LORD rebuke thee” (Jude 1:9) to the devil. Michael did not embellish his language with impious speech, even at the devil. “Yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing [Greek, blasphēmia, blasphemous, e.g., filthy swear words] accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke thee” (Jude 1:9). For Michael, prevailing over the devil was delivering the Almighty’s judgment that the satan no longer had the right to place an accusation against the saints in the Courts of Heaven before the Divine Council. This has been his customary practice as witnessed by his accusation of Job (1:6-12; 2:1-7). Michael’s power in battle is his certainty: (1) of the Almighty’s ability to kill, then “cast into hell” (Luke 12:5), and (2) of the finality of the Second Death, where even “death and hell were cast into the lake of fire” (Revelation 20:14). LORD, may we be as bold as Michael, not fearing mortal death, because we have been given immortal life. In Jesus’ name, amen. 

Movies With Bad Endings

No one likes a movie with a bad ending. God especially knows it. The devil even admits it, so his antichrist attempts to masquerade as God in the Temple. But, in the end, “fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them. And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever” (Revelation 20:9-10 KJV). Then, why does all the rest of angelic and human history have to transpire before then? The Almighty knows everything He has to accomplish to fulfill all righteousness to get to the point it could be said, “And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself shall be with them, and be their God. And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away” (21:3-4). Though we look at all the upcoming events with concern, we want this final outcome. Even so, come, Lord Jesus. Amen. 

Tribulation Ten Days (Revelation 2:8)

If the Church of Smyrna (Revelation 2:8-11) was also representative of early Church History immediately after the Apostolic age, then suffering purified Christ’s Church. “Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life” (Revelation 2:10 KJV). Possibly the Lord giving a specific number of days for Smyrna’s suffering indicates a limit to their suffering, which would give hope. And, just as our Lord “learned obedience by the things which He suffered” (Hebrews 5:8), Smyrna was accounted worthy to also suffer shame for His name. LORD, make us to be worthy as Smyrna, and to fear You more than the limited suffering that purifies us. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Jesus Wants You Well

C.S. Lovett, a retired USAF chaplain, wrote, “I do not mean to imply that God doesn’t use sickness… But the point is — He [God] doesn’t SEND sickness,” in his classic book, Jesus Wants You Well (1973). Growing up in the early 1970’s in evangelical, fundamental, Bible preaching churches, I remember being introduced to the writings of Dr. Lovett’s Personal Christianity by a blessed, fervent church friend. Lovett got it right, and he disagreed with conventional wisdom on 2Corinthians 12:7-10 about Paul’s thorn in the flesh. The devil wants us sick, since the “thorn in the flesh” (2Corinthians 12:7 KJV) was a “messenger [Greek, aggelos, angel] of Satan [Greek, satan, adversary]” (12:7) sent by God to “buffet” (12:7) Paul — and us. An evil angel of Satan was allowed to torment Paul, like Jesus was “led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil” (Matthew 4:1). The Father no more wanted Jesus to be tempted to make Jesus sin, any more than He wanted Paul to be buffeted to make him perpetually ill. Sure, we are to “glory in [our] infirmities” (12:9) for “when I am weak, then am I strong” (12:10) in the mean time; but, it is the devil buffeting with the sickness. Jesus came to heal and deliver us from the sickness, unless we have hidden issues allowing the adversary to successfully accuse us to prevent our healing. “When the even was come, they brought unto Him many that were possessed with devils: and He cast out the spirits with His word, and healed all that were sick: That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias [Isaiah] the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses” (Matthew 8:16-17; compare Isaiah 53:4-5). Our response to being buffeted is to glory in our infirmities, thus strengthening us spiritually, but not simply to give in to sickness. Brothers and sisters, Jesus wants us well. Let the Holy Spirit persuade you what you should believe.

Casting Out Demons

Plain Christians can cast out Satan from their presence by simply resisting him (James 4:7) and his temptations. One of the “signs [that] shall follow them that believe; In My name shall they cast out devils” (Mark 16:17 KJV); but, be warned, in supernatural warfare, sometimes “this kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting” (Mark 9:29 KJV). LORD, prepare Thy people for overcoming the Wicked One. Amen and amen.
