Because You Believe

We cannot but speak what we believe. In other words, what we do not speak (where there is opportunity) — we do not believe. “For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard” (Acts 4:20 KJV).

First, faith is only saving faith, if it is accompanied by works, where there is opportunity. “What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him?” (James 2:14).

Second, faith is dead, if not accompanied by works, where there is opportunity. “Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone” (James 2:17).

Third, faith is always looking to express itself with works. “Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works” (James 2:18).

Fourth, faith understands the vanity or emptiness of claiming, “I believe,” without accompanied works. “But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?” (James 2:20).

Fifth, faith is not destroyed but perfected by works. “Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect?” (James 2:22).

Sixth, faith is not the sole condition of justification, unless we can remove the necessity of:

(a) Repentance and baptism, i.e., “Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost” (Acts 2:38),

(b) Forsaking all for Christ, i.e., “26 If any man come to Me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple. 27 And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after Me, cannot be My disciple. 33 So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be My disciple” (Luke 14:26-27, 33), and

(c) Confession from the heart and the mouth of Jesus as Lord, Master, and Boss, i.e., “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved” (Romans 10:9 KJV).

Accordingly, “Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only” (James 2:24).

Seventh, faith does not allow for a spiritless body, any more than we would allow the deadness of a demonic spirit to qualify in inhabiting the body. “For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also” (James 2:26).

Father, grant us the courage and understanding to see the Foundation of Salvation and Justification as coming from Christ only, but not to be confused by the Terms and Conditions for Salvation, that we would engage in a fruitless and groundless attempt to establish salvation as only a claim of faith in Christ. Grant us fuller instruction, and preserve us from any form of self-trust as the foundation of our hope for eternal life. Give Your people understanding of the Salvation in Christ Jesus, as able to save them to the uttermost “that come unto God by Him [Christ]” (Hebrews 7:25). Lord Jesus, return quickly and deliver us. Amen.

Avoiding Back Injury

Lifting heavy objects by squatting, head up, tailbone down, and keeping the object close to your chest as you stand up, is the best way to avoid lower back injury, according to safety experts. Some call it, Lift with your legs.  Better yet, if it’s that heavy, team lift, where possible. “Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety” (Proverbs 11:14 KJV). Kudos to all the safety guys I encountered, who contributed to my lack of lower back injury during my work career! You generally don’t realize you’re lifting wrong, until you injure yourself. Better to act like everything is heavy. Attempting to reach over a heavy object, arching your back, and using your body like a crane, leaves you open to lower back injury. Flexibility of bending at the hip first, then at your knees, when you squat to lift is key. Keeping your spine somewhat straight helps, as you lift. Muscle memory ingrains the idea. Back braces, in my opinion, are not as important as understanding how to protect your back. It is as if it takes more humility to squat and lift than to bend over and potentially injure yourself lifting too heavy an object. As with any human endeavor, “Safety is of the LORD” (Proverbs 21:31). May the LORD bless you and keep you and make His face shine upon you, give you peace, and protect your lower back. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Firstfruits of All Thine Increase

The Law of Firstfruits is directed from the Unseen Realm of God upon all who honor the LORD with their substance and the beginning of their increase. “Honour the LORD with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase: So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine” (Proverbs 3:9-10 KJV). Our “substance” (3:9) is whatever we already possess. The “firstfruits of all thine increase” (3:9) is the beginning of our income flow or material enlargement, but not all our future profit or increase. God seeks to promote our prosperity, not consume it. He seeks to take away the sickness of heart that is afraid to trust Him because of repeated past disappointments. “Hope deferred maketh the heart sick: but when the desire cometh, it is a tree of life” (Proverbs 13:12). The LORD desires a mindset and heart attitude excited and expectant of blessing to rest upon our home and offspring, because we understand and trust Him, when we give the firstfruits offering. “And the first of all the firstfruits of all things, and every oblation of all, of every sort of your oblations, shall be the priest’s: ye shall also give unto the priest the first of your dough [for bread baking], that He may cause the blessing to rest in thine house” (Ezekiel 44:30). We do not give to the Kingdom of God from OT legalism or to manipulate God, but He desires us to have a holy expectation of material blessing with His signature approval. Father, teach us the joy of giving the firstfruits of our increase that Your blessing may rest upon our house. May we walk as Your blessed ones prospering in whatever we do. May our preservation and blessing testify of Your goodness to the Church, the world, and all the Unseen Realm. In Jesus’ name, we ask it. Amen and amen.

We Be Brethren

Ever been around someone hard to get along with? No matter what you do or say, they are contrary? Or, they continually must show you what they know? They are right, and you must be mistaken? Welcome to life! This could happen in extended family circles, church family circles, work, society in general, national, and international. “And Abram said unto Lot, Let there be no strife, I pray thee, between me and thee, and between my herdmen and thy herdmen; for we be brethren” (Genesis 13:8 KJV). Jesus blessed the peacemakers. Is everyone going to heaven as brothers? No, but in a larger sense, every man is a brother. Every woman is a sister. “Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God” (1John 4:7). John continues the power and simplicity of the thought. If you cannot love someone who is present that you can see, then how could you love God whom you cannot see? “If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?” (4:20). Check your religion with the reality of the Holy Spirit’s testimony. Father, remove the blinders from our interpretation of Your Word. Help us to practically grasp the obvious, yet not become universalists. Draw Your Church together. Cast the wicked one out of family circles. Bind up the wounds of our nation. May Your kingdom come and Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. In Jesus’ name, we petition it in the Courts of Heaven. Amen and amen.
