What Did Jesus Mean?

“He that is not against us is on our part” (Mark 9:40 KJV). Jesus had just responded to His disciples forbidding others from casting out demons in His name, who were not followers and colleagues of theirs. Jesus is not interested in building our human organizations; instead, He glories in raising up His Spiritual Kingdom. We are not to quantify support for Jesus simply by counting membership in our group or following, because we are only fellow laborers with the larger Body of Christ. We ought to pray as an organization for all the endeavors of the Body, whether we are familiar with the other members or not. Our power is not in the superiority of our numbers at any given location but our connection with the entire Body of Christ. “He that is not with Me is against Me; and he that gathereth not with Me scattereth abroad” (Matthew 12:3). Our understanding and emphasis must be upon our connection to Jesus.

Yes, we have more connection to Christ’s Body than possibly we have appreciated; but, do we have more connection to OT Israel than also we have realized? Before there was an Israel, back at the Beginning, at the time of the Fall, the battle lines were drawn, when the LORD announced the conflict between Satan “and the woman, and between thy [Satan’s] seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel” (Genesis 3:15). Israel and the Jews proclaim, “We have Abraham to our father” (Matthew 3:9; Luke 3:8); and likewise, the Church acknowledges Abraham’s parentage. “Know ye therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham” (Galatians 3:7).

What connects Israel and the Church? The Messiah. It is Jesus, who proclaimed, “I and my Father are one” (John 10:30), and further made known, “he that hath seen Me hath seen the Father” (14:9). Both Israel and the Church are peculiar to the Almighty. “Now therefore, if ye will obey My voice indeed, and keep My covenant, then ye [Israel] shall be a peculiar treasure unto Me above all people: for all the earth is Mine” (Exodus 19:5). “But ye [the Church] are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of Him who hath called you out of darkness into His marvellous light” (1Peter 2:9).

Israel’s current status is “unbelief” (Romans 11:20) and “blindness” (11:25) for the past 2,000 years. But, God’s choice or election of Israel is unconditional, “for the gifts and calling of God are without repentance” (11:29). All of this is consistent with the “purpose of God according to election [that it] might stand, not of works, but of Him that calleth” (9:11). On the other hand, God’s Church has also been called, chosen, or elected (Romans 8:28) to fulfill His purpose of fulfilling His promise to Abraham of gaining for Himself “many nations” (Genesis 17:4), even while Israel sleeps. “Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD; and the people whom He hath chosen for His own inheritance” (Psalm 33:12).

If both Israel and the Church are to “declare His glory among the heathen; His marvellous works among all nations” (1Chronicles 16:24), then the Church does not replace Israel but explains the conduct of Israel “until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in” (Romans 11:25). The Church is only doing what Israel should have done, but without the baggage of the ceremonial, Mosaic Law. It would appear the Fulness of the Gentiles concludes at the Rapture or Harpazō of the Church (1Thessalonians 4:17), when the prophetic program of the Seventieth Week of Daniel (Daniel 9:24-27) would recommence, concluding with the Battle of Armageddon (Revelation 16:16; 19:19-21), the Spiritual Rebirth of the Nation of Israel (Isaiah 66:8), and the Second Coming of Jesus Christ to begin the Millennium (Revelation 19:15).

To be remembered, the all important outpouring of the Spirit of God that defines the essence of the Church (Acts 2:38) was originally promised to Israel (cf. Jeremiah 31:31). Finally, the Blessing will come home to Israel! “And I will put My Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in My statutes, and ye shall keep My judgments, and do them” (Ezekiel 36:27). Only by unbelief has Israel been sidelined, God using the Church to stir up Israel to jealousy (Romans 11:11). That God’s election of Israel might stand, He will pour out His Spirit upon Israel in one day (Isaiah 66:11) and will work out all the elements upon the Nation that once had only been received by a small number of Jews 2,000 years earlier at Pentecost (Acts 2).

Father, bring about all Your will for Israel and Your Church that You may receive the honor and praise for so vast, mighty, wise, and loving a work. Lord Jesus, return quickly. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen and amen.

Communion and the Coming of the Lord

The NT church practice of communion has its roots in the Passover observance of Jehovah passing over the households in Egypt and not slaying the firstborn, when the blood of a lamb was applied to the door posts. Jesus celebrated the Passover meal with His disciples and directed them to continue the practice with the focus upon His substitution as the sacrifice for our sins.

“And He took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is My body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of Me. Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in My blood, which is shed for you” (Luke 22:19-20 KJV).

Why the need for an ongoing repetition of the ceremony?

His glory.

“For My sake alone I will act, for how can I allow My name to be defiled? I will not share My glory with anyone else!” (Isaiah 48:11 NET).

He is worthy.

We need to be very jealous about the name of our LORD, even as He is jealous. If the Church takes lightly God’s honor and glory in not remembering the Lord’s atoning death on the Cross, how can we expect the world to take seriously the love of God for a sinning world?

What is the connection with our Lord’s Coming for His Church?

“For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord’s death till He come” (1Corinthians 11:26 KJV).

Once the Lord returns, we shall see Him as He is, and we won’t need ceremonies to remember Him. So, when we participate in the Lord’s Supper, we are both remembering His sacrifice for us and looking forward to His return.

“Them that honour Me I will honour” (1Samuel 2:30).

Father, we desire to glorify You now and forever, for You are worthy. Thank You for the sacrifice of Your Dear Son. May it echo throughout eternity the good and great God You are. Lord Jesus, return quickly. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen and amen.

What Is Glory?

“Thus saith the LORD, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches: But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth Me, that I am the LORD which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith the LORD” (Jeremiah 9:23-24 KJV). Glory is the recognition, honor, or renown due to a person. So, when Paul writes, “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23), it means our actions fall short of giving God the glory, not because we tried and it was not good enough, but because we did not justly give God what we were able. “It is not good to eat much honey: so for men to search their own glory is not glory” (Proverbs 25:27). Only the “well done, good and faithful servant” (Matthew 25:23) is truly valuable, since it comes from God. Growth in grace and understanding of why Christ should be praised is our essential purpose for existing. “But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To Him be glory both now and for ever. Amen” (2Peter 3:18). Father, keep us from taking your glory. Enable us to walk humbly. Help us to understand You better, so we can give You heartfelt praise, for You are worthy. Teach us understanding of You, so our praise of You comes not from empty understanding or forced emotion. Cause us to be surprised and encouraged, for You alone are the reason for endless praise. Lord Jesus, return quickly. Amen.

Father of Lies

When we lie, we own the devil as our father and practice the same evil desires as Lucifer, when he coveted God’s glory. Lucifer murdered the Almighty in his heart, when he refused the truth that all glory belongs to the Most High. Denying the truth of our Creator’s worthiness of all glory is the foundation of all lies. “Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it” (John 8:44 KJV). If simply not declaring all the facts about a circumstance is lying, then would a photograph where a house appears larger than it is, be lying? Intention is obviously the point. Do we see God as unworthy of His glory? Then we murder God in our heart. LORD, may we exalt You in our heart as worthy of the glory due You. May we not be those, who say, I know You, and keep not Your commandments, and be accounted a “liar, and the truth is not in [us]” (1John 2:4). Bless Yourself. Return quickly. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Show Me Your Glory

Moses had just interceded for Israel after they worshipped a false god in the form of a Golden Calf. Jehovah heard and answered Moses’ prayer. Yahweh then promised, “My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest” (Exodus 33:14 KJV). Moses had already secured God’s promised presence, but he made a further request, which God will delight to answer for all His children. “I beseech Thee, shew [pronounced shō] me Thy glory” (33:18). “And He said, I will make all My goodness pass before thee, and I will proclaim the name of the LORD before thee; and will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will shew mercy on whom I will shew mercy. And He said, Thou canst not see My face: for there shall no man see me, and live. And the LORD said, Behold, there is a place by Me, and thou shalt stand upon a rock: And it shall come to pass, while My glory passeth by, that I will put thee in a clift of the rock, and will cover thee with My hand while I pass by: And I will take away Mine hand, and thou shalt see My back parts: but My face shall not be seen” (33:19-23). “When we respond to the glory of God, supernatural things will happen that otherwise would not” (Robert Henderson).

Suffering and Glory

Suffering as a Christian is not a strange thing, even with our constitutional forgetfulness and ignorance multiplying our sorrows. “Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you: But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ’s sufferings; that, when His glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy” (1Peter 4:12-13 KJV). But, rejoice because those who suffer with Jesus will also be glorified with Him. No suffering, no glory.

The Secret for Christian Dieting

“Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God” (1Corinthians 10:31 KJV). Paul is giving us the secret for Christian Dieting. The reason we seek weight control, greater agility, better mobility, greater flexibility, more utility, increased longevity, and overall better health is the glory of God. We do not seek it for the vanity of man’s esteem or simply our own pleasure, but solely for the glory of God. We are willing to change our affection for different foods, exercises, and lifestyles because there is no greater cause than the glory of God. Anything less than the glory of God, our discipline would give way to weakness, because we know God’s Spirit gives us the power to fulfill the goal of eating, drinking, and doing for the glory of God.

Superstition and Luck

Superstition and luck are the irrational belief that some guiding force for good or ill is directing life. The supernatural is by definition an unnatural explanation for events, describing both God and the devil. Faith and confidence are associated with God, while superstition and luck are not. When Paul was bit by a venomous snake, the superstitious islanders concluded he was a murderer being justly punished; but, when he survived, they called him a god. Take care to give the Almighty your confidence and all the glory; otherwise, like Herod taking undue credit for his speech, God will judge you. “And immediately the angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the glory: and he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost” (Acts 12:23 KJV).

What is the Glory of God?

Both of the following stories illustrate the glory of God. A trucker was driving his commercial rig en route to Louisville, Kentucky in 1961. In the middle of the day, the clouds became dark, the rain heavy, the roads slick, and the wind blew hard, almost parallel to the ground. Truckers were turning on their headlights, and the apprehensive driver rolled down his window a little because his windshield was fogging up. Suddenly, a small sparrow flew through his open window! It landed on the steering wheel between his hands.
