Most workplace accident investigations look for cause and effect, and will normally find a human responsible, making the accident preventable. Though insurance companies do list “act of God” as a reason for lack of coverage, it is not due to any religious belief in God, but a simple admission of a natural event beyond the reasonable control of a party. A New Jersey (USA) toll booth worker called out of work due to a “gut feeling” something bad was going to happen. Two disturbing dreams awoke her, so she called out. Only hours later did a garbage truck crash into the collection booth, in which she normally would be working, seriously injuring the driver and toll collector. Whether it was an angel or premonition, she had recently been drawing closer to God. “Are they [angels] not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?” (Hebrews 1:14 KJV). We need to pay closer attention to God and His Unseen Realm, for it is He “with whom we have to do” (4:13). LORD, help us to draw near to You, for then we know You draw nearer to us. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
Dreams
Waking or Sleeping
Do you remember your dreams? Whether your imagination is visual, auditory, or only thoughts, what you go to bed thinking then awake thinking, is a good indication of what you were dreaming. Clinical proof? No, but consider Jacob’s Ladder. “And he dreamed, and behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven: and behold the angels of God ascending and descending on it” (Genesis 28:12 KJV). When Jacob awoke, he said, “Surely the LORD is in this place” (28:16). Cultivate your conversations with God by your thoughts and prayers before you drop off to sleep. Claim from Him the promise of sleep. “He giveth His beloved sleep” (Psalm 127:2). And, He will give you the sleep you need. A suggestion: Pray that God would show you His glory. Journal your conversations with the LORD, and see how He develops your thinking. It will only get better, more and more “unto the perfect day” (Proverbs 4:18).
Try the Spirits
Dreams need to be interpreted by the same standard as anything else where God may be speaking to you. “Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world” (1John 4:1 KJV). Just as God may be speaking to you through an individual while awake, not all dreams come from God. “If there arise among you a prophet, or a dreamer of dreams, and giveth thee a sign or a wonder, And the sign or the wonder come to pass, whereof he spake unto thee, saying, Let us go after other gods, which thou hast not known, and let us serve them; Thou shalt not hearken unto the words of that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams: for the LORD your God proveth you, to know whether ye love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul” (Deuteronomy 13:1-3).
Shohei Ohtani: Beyond the Dream
“Life doesn’t make dreams. Dreams make life” (from “Shohei Ohtani: Beyond the Dream” November 17, 2023 ESPN+ documentary about Shohei Ohtani [大谷 翔平], the Japanese professional, two-way baseball pitcher and batter). Ohtani’s outstanding performance at the 2023 World Baseball Classic and the Major League Baseball All-Star Games are only past events from his now famous “dream board.” World champion is his vision for the future as Ohtani #17 moves from the Los Angeles Angels to the Los Angeles Dodgers with an unprecedented 10-year, $700 million contract, where he deferred accepting payment of $680 million until 2034, so the Dodgers would be free to recruit other players to help the team achieve the goal of becoming World Series champions. Christians are wise not to be led astray by a dream not from God. “If there be a prophet among you, I the LORD will make Myself known unto him in a vision, and will speak unto him in a dream” (Numbers 12:6 KJV). If Shohei Ohtani can be motivated by his love of baseball and dream of MLB championships, why can’t disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ dream of bringing life to a world of lost sinners in need of a Shepherd, because of our love for Jesus? “Heaven and earth shall pass away, but My words shall not pass away” (Matthew 24:35; Mark 13:31; Luke 21:33). LORD, You alone can grant me those dreams for Your Kingdom. And, You alone will fulfill them. Amen and amen.
Built to Dream
“In a dream, a night vision, when deep sleep falls on people as they sleep in their beds” (Job 33:15 NET). REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, associated with dreaming, often escapes us, when we fail to get a good night’s sleep. Dreams we remember make us smile, when they motivate us toward a better tomorrow. “Where there is no vision [Hebrew, châzôn, dream, vision, oracle], the people perish” (Proverbs 29:18 KJV). May our All Knowing Father restore to us the dreams of His kingdom come and will be done on earth as it is in Heaven. Remove the obstacles, LORD. Amen and amen.
