“I knew a man in Christ [not me]” (2Corinthians 12:2 KJV), diligent but unambitious by the world’s standards, who checked with a friend of a friend how he was doing on the military promotion list. His query was met with the reply, Who’s your sponsor? Surprised, he had no adequate response, and eventually retired as a lower field grade officer. Who or what are you trusting to get to Heaven? “Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost” (Titus 3:5 KJV). But, are we so free of good works, we actually deny Him? “They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate” (Titus 1:16 KJV).
